The City of Yuba City is always looking for quality individuals who are committed to making our City a safe and enjoyable place to live, work and recreate.  One of the most critical assignments within our community is in the police service.  Do you have what it takes?

Very often we are asked, 'How do you screen police officer applicants?'  During the process the candidates must successfully pass a physical agility test, oral examination, department review by senior commanders and the Chief of Police, a comprehensive background investigation (similar in extent and style to a federal security clearance process), medical and psychological testing, drug screening and in some cases a polygraph examination.  Candidates who have already completed a certified California POST Basic Police Academy (usually 22 weeks) and pass the previously mentioned process, are placed in a training phase with  an instructor officer for a minimum of 16 weeks.  If successful in these initial screening exposures, you are then on a probationary basis for a total of two years from your date of hire (shorter for lateral officers). The screening process and training for civilian support staff members differs by position assignment; however, it too is very demanding. 

How seriously do we look into your background prior to offering you employment?  Have a look: 

Yuba City Police Officers and civilian staff are entrusted with responsibility to keep our City safe from crime and corruption; therefore, a history of ethical and moral behavior is of the utmost importance. Your background will be looked at very closely. Candidates who have a history of unethical or immoral behavior will not be hired. You will be subjected to an intensive background evaluation, which will include, but is not limited to, the following:

• Your past behavior and the choices you have made must demonstrate positive traits that will support your candidacy for Police Officer or civilian support staff member and reflect favorably on your character.
  
• You must have a history of lawful conduct.
  
• You must possess high standards of honesty and integrity as demonstrated by your dealings with individuals and organizations. Falsifying, misrepresenting, or purposely omitting information on any document or during the selection process is grounds for your immediate removal from the selection process.
  
• You must respect the rights of all people and have an appreciation for the diversity that characterizes Yuba City. A history of domestic violence, physical altercations, or discourteous, abusive, or violent treatment of others may indicate a lack of self-discipline, an unwillingness or inability to cooperate, or a disregard for the rights of others.
  
• You must have a history of making responsible choices regarding the use of drugs and alcohol.
  
• Your employment and military (if applicable) histories must demonstrate the motivation and success-orientation needed to succeed as a member of our team.
  
• Your financial and driving records must demonstrate responsible decisions and appropriate behavior.
